Midget


  • +2 Dexterity, –2 Strength.
  • Small: As a Small creature, a midget gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but she uses smaller weapons than humans use, and her lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character.

  • Favored Class: Rogue. A multiclass midget’s rogue class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing. Uncivilized midgets favor the Barbarian class.

Midgets are clever, capable opportunists. Midget individuals and families find room for themselves wherever they can. Often they are strangers and
wanderers, and others react to them with suspicion or curiosity. Midgets might be reliable, hard-working citizens, or they might be thieves just waiting for the opportunity to make a big score and disappear in the dead of night. Regardless, Midgets are cunning, resourceful survivors. It is their reputation as theives that preduices some other races against them. Apes in particular find them untrust worthy.
Personality: Midgets prefer trouble to boredom. They are notoriously curious and fun loving. More than one party of adventrers has cursed their propensity for jokes at others expense (particularly practical jokes).
Relying on their ability to survive or and escape to "attack another day", danger, they demonstrate a daring that many larger people can’t match. Midgets clans are nomadic, wandering wherever circumstance and curiosity take them. Midgets live for "the good life" and the pleasure it can bring, and they tend to spend gold as quickly as they acquire it. Their size reduces their resistance to the power of strong drink, they are always willing to buy a round (as long as they are consious).
Physical Description: Midgets stand about 3 feet tall and usually weigh between 30 and 35 pounds. Their skin is as variable as that of other humans but their hair is usually black and straight. They have brown or black eyes. Barbarian midgets favor the Mohwak or other shaved head hair treatment, the rest like to be creative in their "do":.
They like to wear simple, comfortable, and practical clothes. A Midget reaches adulthood at the age of 20 and generally lives into the middle of her second century.
Relations: Midgets try to get along with everyone else. They are adept at fitting into a community of humans, dwarves, elves, or whatever.

Midget Lands: Midgets have no lands of their own. Instead, they live in the lands of other races, where they can benefit from whatever resources those lands have to offer. Midgets often form tight-knit communities in human or dwarven cities. While they work readily with others, they often make friends only their own kind. Midgets also settle into secluded places where they set up self-reliant villages. Midget communities, however, are known for picking up and moving en masse to some place that offers a new opportunity, such as a new mine that has just opened, or to a land where a devastating war has made skilled workers hard to find. If these opportunities are temporary, the community may pick up and move again once the opportunity is gone, or once a better one presents itself.
There exists a large midget population that, like the gipsye takes to traveling as a way of life, driving wagons or guiding boats from place to place, and maintaining no permanent home.

Midgets seldom form a strong relationship to the gods of Berth. Instaed, Midgets recognize countless small gods, which they say rule over individual villages, forests, rivers, lakes, and so on. They pay homage to these deities to ensure safe journeys as they travel from place to place. They recognize the power that comes from the gods, but mostly turn their backs on it in favor of less powerful, but more personal dieties. Imagine Shinto and Amerind religions.

Unlike members of most races, they prefer actual comfort to shows of wealth.

Combat

Midgets prefer to fight defensively, usually hiding and launching ranged attacks as the foe approaches. Their tactics are very much like those of elves but place more emphasis on cover and concealment and less on mobility.
