Battle Beasts of Kano

The human natives of Kano have been driven from their ancestral holdings by these creatures that are a left over from the tech age. This is because there is a degenerate gnomish remnant of the first terraforming facility under the surface of Kano. They have released battle beasts they have raised to allow them to covertly come up to the surface.

The gnome residents of the tech dungeon under this island call themselfs the Jontik. They live in an incredably controled enviornment. Survival has been a technological struggle for them. Much of the facility was destroyed during the war of the gods when this island was struck by a clean nuclear bomb that leveled all on the surface (which represented 60% of the original buildings) and about 1/2 of the underground rooms. No devices to measure radiation survived, and in the interest of safety, the surface was outlawed and all the efforts of the survivors for the next 1K years was to rebuild the underground and wait out the decay of the radiation they were sure would devistate the surface.

It has been only the last 100 years that the creatures from underground have shown any interest in the surface. At first it was just some scouting parties that were sent on what all were sure was a suicide mission to discover the conditions above. For 10 years after their report was given, the gnome elders considered what to do next. It is a time of fantastic celebration for these people. They are peaceful and controled, but unemotional to an extreame. Their jubilation at "reclaiming the land" is palpable though seldom expressed.

The scouts told them of the natives and most of the discussions were about how to proceed with their repopulation. It was decided that negotiations with the natives would prove to be fruitless and would result in deaths among the Jontik people which is an impossible condition for them. They are a VERY conservative and timid people. They decide to attempt to use an apparatus they had repaired to scientifically give bearth to historical featuses using classic Battle Beast machines. They created creatures from the past and even improved on them.

First, they created a modified deinonychus, a fast carnivore that would act on the surface as scouts. They were geneticaly modified using the old technology that created the battle beasts to make them amphibious by giving them webbed back feet and snorkel-like bone cone on the top of their head. This allows them to stay underwater just offshore and conserve their energy for days at a time. Altogether they made 32 of these creatures. Next, they created a "Super Rex", similar to a T. Rex but with more brain and the carapace around the face similar to the stegasaurous to protect the head, brain and face of the creature. Later, they created other creatueres as well to perform more specific tasks as their proficiency with the technology increased.

The creatures can not breed and have a life span of 30 years. To protect any of the Jontik from these creatures, those going on the surface take a pill once a day. This pill causes a unique smell to be sweated that labels them in the brains of the Battle Beasts as "poisonous". Each of the creatures has a controler that works via radio waves to control their actions and relay back images of what the creatures see. Through these devices, they can control the beasts safely from inside their underground city.

As an additional protection, they have a device that can be attached to the creatures remote control mechanism that gives them an anti-magic shield. This sphere provides the creatures with a magic resistance roll of the spell level minus 10x100 So, the creatures have a 90% resistance to 1st level spells and 50% resistant to 5th level spells and so on. They will only use these devices when necessary

Their plan is to allow the beasts to drive all humans and other large creatures from the island. Then, the creatures die off and the Jontek will have time to make fortifications and preperation to make the island able to protect itself.

The situation when the party arrives is:
The islander displaced from Kono are on the neighboring island which is suffering from a depelteion of resources. The people are struggling to survive with the people from two islands being forced to live on Hoana only. They have a hawaiian culture, and welcome visits by their own people, but greatly fear men coming on ships as the only ones they have ever seen are the sky pirates.

The Battle Beasts own the surface of Kano, but only a handful of Jonteks are on the surface as observers only. The rest of their people are still living underground. When the party starts killing the beasts, the scouts find out and report back to the elders. They will quickly see that this powerful group must be bargained with. They will send out emisaries to speak to the party and try to convince them to help the Jontik.

Deinonychus This fast carnivore uses its speed, its long, grasping forearms, large teeth, and hind legs with their ripping talons in terrible combination. It hunts by running at prey, leaping, and raking with its rear claws as it claws and bites. The jump is a charge, so the creature gains a +2 on attack rolls. The rear talons count as only one attack, and cause a total of 2d6 damage. When attacking a larger creature, the deinonychus often jumps on top of it, and holds on with its front claws while continuing to rake with the rear claws. The deinonychus has a relatively large brain for a dinosaur, and its pack hunts with cunning tactics. Despite being 12 feet long, this dinosaur is only about 6 feet tall. Its tail extends straight out behind it, held aloft by an intricate structure of bony supports, thus allowing its 150 pounds of weight to be carried entirely by the back legs. The deinonychus is a dromaeosaur, dinosaurs which are related to ornithomimosaurs; its distant relatives include the chicken-sized night hunter, compsognathus, and the ostrich-like struthiomimus. Neither is as formidable as the deinonychus.
