THE DEAD ZONE

The dead zone is 300 to 350 miles across. The defination of the zone as far as the scientists is concerned is that the conditions do not support life. At the edge of the zone, the temprature is 130+5d4 degrees (135 to 150) and the atmosphere is 70% oxygen of normal. The worst condition is in the middle of the zone. There, the temprature is 180+5d4 degrees and 0% atmosphere. The middle of the zone is about 150 to 125 miles in and this works out to an increase of 3 degrees per 10 miles and a decrease of 2% air per 10 miles. There is no way they could know what these figures are, so use them to back up the dramatic effesct as they roast and quit breathing slowly. Even though the worst conditions will be found in the middle, don't forget they still have to come out the other side!
The surface of the Dead Zone looks like our own planet mars-nothing but dunes, low hills and small valleys. There are mountains and great canals in some areas. These areas may provide obstacles in addition to the regular encounters.

Encounter Roll=2d6 (2-12) Type of Encounter
2 Volcano Eruption
3 Canal Causes Updraft-Sudden temprature rise
4d6 degrees higher - Make extra con roll at new temp
4 Mountain forces change of direction
1d12x100 miles additional distance
5 Flamable Gas!
Save VS normal fire or take 2d6 damage
6 Huge valley "Sink" seen -Going into valley stops con rolls for 1d12 turns (Atmosphere is thicker)
7 Temprature Decrease - Skip a Con roll
8 Temprature increases - make an extra con roll
9 Canal Seen
10 Dead Atmosphere machine seen
Mostly a radioactive, glassy pit
11 Canal Causes Downdraft - Sudden temprature drop
4d6 degrees lower - Skip 2 con rolls
12 Struck by meteor

See table 75 for heat on movement effects.
Several means may be used to minimize the effect of the temprature. Remember that the tempratures given below are "personal" tempratures which may or may not be the temprature the character experiences. Calculate this for each character seperatly.

Activity Level Adjustments to

Adjustments to

Stationary or inactive 0 0
Moderate Activity (Walking) -1 +2
Strenious Activity (Fighting) -3 +4

Check the table below once per hour and have effects take place immediatly. So a trip of 24 hours will require 24 rolls.
